Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced government’s acquisition of Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC) effective Friday April 1.
Last year, government began the process of acquiring the majority share of DOMLEC from Emera Incorporated with the intent of returning DOMLEC to the ownership of the Dominican people.
According to the Prime Minister, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica will sign an agreement with Emera Inc. to purchase its 52% stake in DOMLEC today, Thursday March 31, 2022.
According to Mister Skerrit, this does not mean an immediate drop in electricity bills however, this is the first step toward the ensuring affordable rates in the future.
He says following the acquisition, Government is set to work toward stabilizing electricity costs and ensuring every Dominican consumer can afford basic electricity rates.
