Plastic Ban Well Received

General Manager of the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, Florian Mitchel says the single-use plastic ban, which took effect on January 1st is showing signs of early success.

Mitchel said based on early assessments citizens are responding positively to the ban.

“From my own personal experience, you would go to a low end person and you would see her already using the biodegradable product I mean you could see the swing is already there, people understand what we are trying to achieve and at the end of the day they are the ones who are going to help us achieve that objective.”

Mitchel is stressing that as of June 30th, single use plastics and Styrofoam products should not be sold, distributed or even used.

He confirmed that by the end of June, the implications would be different regarding the plastic ban, where persons can be charged for selling of Styrofoam and or non biodegradable material and single use plastics and plastic items.
