Chairman of the Electoral Commission Gerald Burton believe there is no time for the introduction of Identification Cards before the next general election is called.
Mr. Burton addressed a panel discussion of the Dominica Electoral Commission on Wednesday.
He said while the equipment to issue ID cards is available it may not be possible to implement the system before elections, constitutionally due by May 2020.
“I am of the view that we cannot allow our nation to descend into chaos over the failure of those of us charged with the constitutional responsibility to resolve this issue in a civil and mature manner.
“…unless we have had sufficient time to test the system and to satisfy ourselves through proper testing that it is fully operational, i would not recommend that the system be used in any upcoming election. I maintain this position,” Burton said.
