Indian Fugitive Mehul Choksi has been remanded to the Dominica State Prison

This despite his lawyers’ argument that Choksi’s health has deteriorated.

A Roseau Magistrate ruled on Thursday that his move to the state prison would have been arranged on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the United Workers Party has released a statement urging the government to bring an end to what it calls the embarrassment being suffered by Dominica in the international community.  This the party says is on account of diamond trader Mehul Choksi’s presence here.

Choksi, a diamond trader, who is a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda through the Citizenship by Investment Programme, is wanted in India, where he is a citizen by birth, for fraud and other serious charges.

He has been in Dominica since May 23rd and is now facing the court on the charge of illegal entry into the island.

The UWP says the justice systems of Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica are under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) and not withstanding Choksi’s alleged crimes in India, it is a crime against humanity to remove him from his constitutional rights and rule of law protection in one part of the ECSC jurisdiction to another part.

The UWP is calling for a stop to what it refers to as an unnecessary scandal in Dominica’s international affairs.

They recommend that Choksi should be returned to Antigua and Barbuda without further delay.
