Reconnection of internet service in the Kalinago Territory and other rural communities is too costly a venture for telecommunications providers here.
That’s according to Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Telecommunications Oscar George who addressed concerns about the lack of service in these areas since the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
A Kalinago student Leah Milinard brought these concerns to the fore last week in a video posted to social media.
Mr. George says Government is aware of the difficulties, but rejected suggestions that the lack of service is due to systematic racism against the Kalinago people.
Meantime, Mr. George says Government is seeking a legal opinion from the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL), as part of efforts to secure island-wide coverage.
