Government Captive Breeding Programme for Endemic Birds
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Reginald Thomas said that the Government has embarked on a captive breeding programme for the two endemic birds on the island.
He said that the birds were exported on Saturday legally to Germany by a St. Lucian.
Dr. Thomas said that arrangements were made with the German authorities Federal Agency for nature conservation to obtain the necessary documents for the safe transfer of the birds.
The birds will be kept in Germany at the facility at the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots for breading particularly of the Sisserou.
He said that a background check was done on the association before the transfer took place
Meantime, Dr. Thomas said that if left in the wild in the event of a natural disaster the birds could have faced extinction.
